Jason Youngberg's Web Site

Welcome to my home page. Thank you for coming. I hope you find what I have presented useful and entertaining.
Greetings!

This website began on the now defunct Prodigy Classic in early 1997 as a way to learn HTML. It was pretty simple back then, a page about what science fiction is, my resume, and a little something with Robotech to try out frames. It was enough to get me a job in Dubuque programming the internet for local sights. But soon I grew out of the 1MB limit and other difficulties. (Yep that's right a 1MB limit, you could fit it on an old 3.5 inch floppy.) I moved on to Net Identity (formerly MailBank) where I've stayed since. While there are other limitations (space and cost), having my own name be my URL is just too good to ignore.

Unfortunately Net Identity does not support dynamic code so I cannot show off my skills as a programmer. I can do Cold Fusion, SQL, ASP, and ASP.NET but that doesn't mean anything here. There's not a whole lot of need for dynamic web pages here in the first place. I mean, what can I do that I'm willing to release publically? Maybe a few polls, but the really fun stuff requires more web space and support than Net Ideneity provides. You see my speciality is programming and coding, not graphics and layout. Besides, this is a personal page. I don't need to draw businesses here. {joke} The purpose of an website is to provide information on a particular subject. In this case the subject is ME I am going to try to show the better side of my personality in addition to everything else.

Like everyone else, I have hopes, dreams, quirks, and hobbies. You know what I mean, the things that make us individuals. You know that little dream you have which you know is too unrealistic to ever come true. All I can say is "Go for it!" It might not come completely true, but at least you tried. Myself, I've always fancied myself as a science-fiction writer. After reading SF for years, I figure it might be possible to actually create something of my own. Never did I think I could ever make a living from writing (OK, almost never), but I do have five or so writing projects I keep myself amused with. Who knows? Someday you just might pick one of my books off the shelf. If not that, maybe instead you will download my novels by the chapter from here. Actually I already have. I wrote several pieces of El Hazard fan fiction in varying stages of completionfor people to read online.

Though I am currently employed I'm keeping my options open, please read my resume and let me know if you are interested. I am available for freelance web development opportunities and I'm always willing to listen about available full time empolyment positions.
Resume

Einstein said, "Imagination is more important than intelligence." But I feel both are necessary to really enjoy life. Every now and then you have to take a few hours to just think. Decide for yourself what you want and establish your own sense of right and wrong. There are some things you should really do yourself. First and foremost are your moral standards. The problem is that every situation is different. You have to take things on a case by case basis. No one book, idea, code, or any past or present system of absolutes can be taken seriously as a source of good morals. For example consider the Christian Bible. It was (and to many is) the key source of morality, but were the times when Christianity controlled a nation peaceful and moral? Most of the time it wasn't. There were Crusades, Inquisitions, and other forms of oppression of non-Christians. Even present day America, being non-Christian is akin to being a second-class citizen and there are people who will try to deny you your rights. I feel a purer morality is found when you look inside yourself and discovery the "why" behind morays. It's been showing that if you explain why something is wrong, instead of just telling them it's wrong, people are more likely to believe you. Personally I try to live by a set of four key points which serve as guidelines only:

Duty Honor
Duty means to be true to yourself and to fulfill your obligations. Do what you can to keep your word. If you cannot, be prepared to not only explain yourself, but to expect and accept the consequences. You have a duty to yourself of independent thought. Blindly following someone without really considering what they say or allowing it to control what you think is the ultimate in personal failure. To do so makes you into a mindless automoton with no will or thought to call your own. Honor is related to duty, but here you show respect to those deserving and in turn you keep yourself worthy of their respect and trust. Honor does not just apply to people, it should also extend to organizations and things which help define you. Be fair and honest and consider how your actions reflect on you and how they affect others. True honor is a step above the Golden Rule.
Loyalty Heroism
Loyalty stems from honor as honor comes from duty. I feel this is a dying trait in American life as people become more fickle and obsessed with instant gratification. If you are treated well by someone, be it person, company, or product, you should stay with it until it becomes unreasonable to do so. For example you should stick with your favorite superstore until something big happens (moving away, store closes, quality of things there go way down, a rival store is noticeable better, etc). Last there is heroism. This is also the hardest to define and the most difficult to maintain. It includes and goes beyond being nice to others for no reason (holding the door for a stranger etc). I feel real heroism is when you willingly give up something for a stranger without expecting any type of reward. It doesn't have to be a big sacrifice, but enough to let the person know there are still decent people in the world.
